Thousands of Young People Take Up MenB Vaccine Ahead of University
Thousands of young people across England have already received their first MenB vaccination as part of the NHS's largest-ever catch-up campaign, helping to protect those at increased risk of meningitis B before starting university or further education.
Since the programme launched on 20 July, more than 89,000 first doses have been given, with strong demand continuing throughout the summer.
Meningococcal B disease can cause serious illnesses including meningitis and sepsis, and in some cases can lead to life-changing complications or death. Young people starting university are particularly at risk due to close-contact living and social environments.
Who is eligible?
The catch-up programme is available to:
- Young people born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008.
- Those born on or after 21 July 2001 who are starting university for the first time this autumn.
- Those born on or after 21 July 2001 who are starting an eligible residential further education course for the first time this autumn.
Two doses of the vaccine are needed for the best protection, given at least 28 days apart.
How to get vaccinated
The NHS is delivering the MenB catch-up programme through participating community pharmacies across England. Eligible 17 and 18-year-olds can book through the NHS National Booking Service, while other eligible young people can contact a participating pharmacy directly.
